Active Transportation at Green Lake Elementary

Our Active Transportation Committee works every year to make commuting to and from school fun, safe, and well...active! For the 2023-2024 school year, we are doing this through THREE main GLES led biking focused initiatives that we encourage you and your GLES students to participate in:

1 - Bike Everywhere (And to School) Month (in May)
2 - GLES biking team/group that supports Cascade’s Pedaling Relief Project (once a month)
3 - Bike to School Bike Trains (ongoing)

BIKE EVERYWHERE (AND TO SCHOOL) MONTH

Tune up your family’s bicycles now and make a plan to participate in the many ‘Bike Everywhere Month’ activities GLES has planned during the month of May.

Bingo cards and additional details will be sent home in your student's backpacks in late April before we kick off the May events.

GLES BIKE EVERYWHERE MONTH ACTIVITIES:

Our main activity will be the GLES BIKE BINGO game that the students will receive before the start of May that prompts them to complete a number of biking or rolling activities, including Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 8th and the GLES Donut Ride on Saturday, May 11th. Every BINGO the student earns enters them into a drawing to win prizes (2024 prize structure pending).

Weds, May 8 - BIKE / ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY

Bike or roll to GLES and stop by the welcome table near the bike racks at the front of the school for free snacks and other goodies. As you arrive at the school, please walk your bike if you are on the sidewalks.

Sat, May 11 - GLES DONUT RIDE

Meet 9am at Mighty-O Donuts for a sweet treat prior to riding clockwise as a group around the outer Green Lake bike path. We will ride rain or shine.

Weds, May 29 - GLES Bike Meetup at the Wallingford Farmers Market

Bike/roll/walk to the event at Meridian Park and meet up for a picnic dinner and fun.

GLES families meet on the west side of park in the grass.

cascade bicycle club's pedal relief project

We are looking to form a group of Green Lake Elementary families to deliver food by bike to food-insecure neighbors via Cascade Bicycle Club’s Pedal Relief Project. Our initial target is to do this once a month starting in the Spring of 2024 and make it a recurring activity throughout the year. We believe this would be a great way for the bicycle-active families of Green Lake Elementary to engage with each other while also doing good within our nearby communities. Please email garettcycles@gmail.com if interested.

Sign up for Green Lake Elementary's May 18th delivery ride athttps://volunteer.cascade.org/acts/console.php?console_type=event_list&event_id=4094&console_id=0100&ht=1

BIKE to school bike trains

We invite you to form and manage a ‘Bike Train’ to bike students to and from Green Lake Elementary during the months of April, May, and June. Each group would coordinate their own route and timing for the Bike Train to function. Please email garettcycles@gmail.com if you do form a bike train or if you have any questions.
